3 Smart Ways to Charge Your Macbook without a Charger

If you’ve forgotten or lost your MacBook charger, and need to charge it, you’ve come to the right place. Believe it or not, you can actually charge your MacBook Pro and MacBook Air without a charger. In this article, we cover 3 different solutions to help you charge your macbook without a charger.

Have you forgotten to carry your MacBook charger with you? Or perhaps your charger has broken, and you can’t find a replacement right now? With these 3 clever solutions to charge your macbook without charger, you might be able to get away with it this time around!

So, if you find yourself without a charger, here are the three ways to charge your MacBook. These are the most accessible ways to charge the MacBook even when you don’t have a charger.

How to charge your MacBook without a charger

Get a USB Converter

Do you have a PC? Great news, because you can actually use it to charge your MacBook! Just get a converter cable that can convert USB 3.0 to USB Type-C to charge the MacBook directly from your PC.

If you have a PC, it is possible to use a converter cable to charge your Macbook

Simply plug the USB end of the cable to your PC, and the USB-C end of the cable to your Mac, and voilà! Charge will start to flow from your PC to your MacBook Pro or MacBook Air.

Use a USB Type C

Depending on your MacBook version, you might be able to charge it with a USB Type-C phone charger for Android. Just plug the cable into the MacBook and charge it from the power outlet.

This charging system is analogous to charging your iPhone. However, the charging speed will be quite slow in this case, since the charger is more limited in terms of output power, and will not be able to supply a high enough current speed to charge your MacBook fast.

Additionally, please beware of using this method repeatedly, as it will unnecessarily overheat your MacBook charger and expose it to potential long-term damages.

Use a Power Bank

Another possibility is to charge your MacBook with the help of a power bank.

However, it will need to be a powerful enough powerbank to charge a macbook, and will need to support USB 3.0 at least. Additionally, this might also depend on the MacBook version you are using.

To try it out, simply use a cable that can convert USB 3.0 to USB Type-C to charge your MacBook without a charger.

Things you need to keep in mind

Before you go on and try any of the methods outlined above, there are a few general tips you need to keep in mind:

  1. If you are using a USB-C phone charger, or any other USB-C charger other than the official MacBook charger, this could potentially negatively impact your MacBook’s battery, especially in the long term. Some side-effects could include battery swelling or battery damage. So, use at your own risk!
  2. Even though these methods might work, the time it takes to take the MacBook can be an issue. Since you are not using the original charger, it might take longer to charge your device.
  3. These are all temporary fixes. However, in the long term, you should look to get an official MacBook charger sooner than later. If you keep using one of these temporary solutions to charge your MacBook, your battery’s health could suffer performance degradation over time.

In the meantime, if you still have some battery left on the MacBook, you should try to preserve it as much as possible, so that you can avoid having to resort to a method which could potentially damage your Macbook Air or MacBook Pro.

Bottom Line

Even though it seemed impossible, we now know there are at least 3 different (and clever!) ways to charge your MacBook without a charger.

However, it is important to remember that the above methods are just temporary solutions, and should only be used in critical situations when there is no other viable alternative.

None of the 3 methods are truly capable of supplying the required power that your MacBook really needs, especially over the long term. Thus, in case your official MacBook charger is missing or not functioning properly or, the best thing to do is to get a new official charger. If you have only forgotten to carry it with you, make sure it is the first thing you pack when you leave home the next time.
